This transmits the sound input and output from the handset to the loudspeaker and microphone , so that other persons can hear what is spoken and talk to the person or persons on phone.

There are 2 types of speaker phones – half duplex and full duplex. In half duplex speaker phones, the sound signal can be transmitted in one direction only. So at a time a person using the phone can either listen or speak . When a person talks, the internal speaker is cut off and while listening, the microphone does not function. The switching between the two modes of operation is discernible.

Full duplex speaker phones allow two way conversation in a seamless fashion. However, these speaker phones are more expensive compared to half duplex speaker phones, since they use electronics using complex algorithms.
