Tapping of phones seems to be a very common phenomenon.  Many home land line phones are tapped

The sound quality for a wired telephone connection is much better than a wireless connection or mobile connection. This is because there is less attenuation and noise when the signal is transmitted over the copper or fiber optic cable.

In many telephones, the speaker phone may be off by default and is activated by pressing a button only when needed. This transmits the sound input and output from the handset to the loudspeaker and microphone , so that other persons can hear what is spoken and talk to the person or persons on phone.

There are 2 types of speaker phones – half duplex and full duplex. In half duplex speaker phones, the sound signal can be transmitted in one direction only. So at a time a person using the phone can either listen or speak . When a person talks, the internal speaker is cut off and while listening, the microphone does not function. The switching between the two modes of operation is discernible.

Full duplex speaker phones allow two way conversation in a seamless fashion. However, these speaker phones are more expensive compared to half duplex speaker phones, since they use electronics using complex algorithms.

Earlier, speaker phones were usually used in companies where a number of people would participate in a discussion over the phone. The speaker phones would be much more expensive compared to conventional land line phones. However, with advances in technology, the price of speaker phones has reduced significantly. Also, many mobile phones are available with the speaker phone feature enabled.

In a speaker phone, the microphone and loudspeaker are provided separately, so that more than one person can participate in the conversation. The loudspeaker will amplify the voice signals received , so that everyone in the room can hear it. The conversation may also be recorded for use at a latter date. Using the microphone, anything spoken in the room is picked up and transmitted over the phone.

When speaker phone are installed in companies, they are often calibrated to suit the acoustics of the room. This ensure that the conversation is clearly transmitted without any echoes or ringing sounds.
